Free Tax Assistance at the Community Center of St. Bernard

Tax preparers from Catholic Charities will be at the Community Center of St. Bernard, 1107 LeBeau St., Arabi, on March 14 and March 28 from 9AM - 3 PM to help low-income residents file their federal tax returns.
Clients are asked to bring their 2007 W-2 and 1099 forms along with any other 2007 tax documents, proof of identification and social security cards.
In order to receive free tax assistance, residents must qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Income limits for this program are: $12,590 for a person filing single without a qualifying child; $14,590 for married filing jointly without a qualifying child; $33,241 if filing single with a qualifying child; $35,241 for married filing jointly with a qualifying child; $37,783 for filing single with more than one child; and $39,783 for married filing jointly with more than one child. Those persons without a qualifying child must also be between 25-65 years of age. Anyone who is married filing separately or who has investment income of more than $2,900 is not eligible for this program. It is necessary to make an appointment in order to meet with a tax preparer. Louisiana Citizens Insurance Tax Credit

Residential and commercial property insurance policyholders will receive an income tax credit for the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation regular and special assessments they paid because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
